Bringing the Farm to Campus

It’s no secret that it’s hard to get local farm food into institutions like universities. They tend to be large organizations that have their food services managed by national organizations and use national broadline distributors.

So at Good Bowls we’re trying to bridge that gap and bring local North Carolina farm produce to universities in the state with our Good Bowls. We’re working with our partner Aramark to get on the shelves at on-campus convenience stores and into student cafeterias. We’re also working on getting Good Bowls vending machines into late-night study spots in various buildings. We’re starting off in our region of central North Carolina, and as we continue to gain in popularity we will expand to universities throughout the state and not only give students, faculty, and staff access to healthy, delicious meals but also give farmers a market to sell their products that hasn’t always been available.

Since Good Bowls originated at UNC Chapel Hill, we’ve been working to expand here on our home campus before taking our farm-to-institution initiative statewide. We first got on shelves on campus last year and this semester we’ve been working to add locations and programs to make Good Bowls available to students, faculty, and staff all across UNC’s vast campus.

This semester we’ve expanded to be available to graduate students through The Beach Cafe and we are now also available as a Plus Swipe so that students with a meal plan can now get a Bowl as a meal with a swipe of their One Card. What better way to stock up that dorm room fridge with a healthy meal or a late night study snack than with some Good Bowls from your local on-campus C-store.

Stay tuned as we work with Aramark to expand our farm to institution initiative statewide in the coming year. App State and UNC Wilmington here we come!
