Community Reinvestment with WellCare NC

Dropping off a van full of Good Bowls at CORA in Siler City

At Equiti Foods we are excited to be working with WellCare NC on an innovative community reinvestment program this year. As part of being a managed Medicare provider in North Carolina, WellCare invests in various initiatives that address non-medical drivers of health, one being access to healthy food, and Good Bowls is happy to be a part.

As part of this initiative we are working to improve the overall health of the community by increasing access to healthy foods for underserved and food insecure populations. CORA recently opened a brand new ‘walk through’ food pantry in Siler City, NC. To help kick off this grand opening, last Friday the Good Bowls team headed over to the pantry with our van loaded with a variety of delicious, nutritious meals.

We met CORA’s Pantry Manager, Pablo Encizo Miranda, and he and the staff helped us to unload and stock the freezers with Good Bowls. The new CORA location in Siler City is not only a beautiful and well-equipped facility, it is also perfectly positioned to provide much-needed access to healthy food for the community.

The philosophy behind WellCare’s reinvestment programs is that by addressing social determinants of health - not just food insecurity but housing instability, transportation, domestic violence, and education - it leads to better overall personal health and stronger communities. Engaging with community partners is essential for national companies like WellCare. Equiti Foods and CORA are operating every day in our communities and we have the trust and relationships required to help these programs flourish.

The current economy, inflation, government cuts, the ending of the NC Healthy Opportunities Pilot, and uncertainty surrounding SNAP are all contributing to rising food insecurity and the need for food programs throughout the state. WellCare’s community reinvestment programs and CORA’s pantries are making a huge difference in the communities. And at Good Bowls, we love using local NC produce to cook delicious meals that are used to provide much needed food to the community - and bolster the overall local food economy.
