Futurum Magazine Highlights Good Bowls

Good Bowls and company founder Dr. Alice Ammerman are featured in the most recent issue of Futurum Magazine.  Futurum Magazine is an international publication that teaches teens from around the world about possible careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields.  In the latest issue, Futurum discusses how nutrition professor Dr. Alice Ammerman created Good Bowls stemming from her decades of work in public health and research of the Mediterranean diet.

Good Bowls sits at the intersection of science, health, and business.  As the Director of UNC’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Alice Ammerman and her team have developed and tested the Med-South Lifestyle Program which combines healthy eating with other healthy activities such as physical activity.  The basis of the Med-South Lifestyle Program is the Mediterranean diet, which includes eating high quality fats (like olive oil), vegetables, nuts, and whole grains.  The Med-South diet has adapted these principles to create recipes that are in line with taste preferences for people living in the southern United States.

That’s where Good Bowls and the business side of things come in.  Good Bowls are healthy frozen meals that come in 14 flavors, all based on the Mediterranean diet and adapted for people living in the south…such as a Carolina BBQ Chicken Bowl or a Farmhouse Mac ‘n Cheese Bowl.  Good Bowls are sourced from local North Carolina farms and made in Hillsborough, NC, which bolsters the entire food economy in the region.

Part of the challenges with getting people to eat healthy food is making it accessible.  That was one of the main motivating factors in creating Good Bowls.  Not only are the bowls a full nutritionally balanced meal, but they are also frozen, giving them a long shelf life and allowing them to be distributed to populations all over the state without worrying about spoilage.  Now Good Bowls can be distributed throughout the region to food deserts, rural areas, and even in frozen food vending machines at work sites - all without having to worry about the meal spoiling in 6 days.

Futurum Magazine educates teens around the world about career opportunities in a wide variety of scientific fields and Good Bowls is the perfect blend of science and research leading to a business opportunity and career.  The Mediterranean diet has been scientifically researched for decades by Dr. Alice Ammerman as well as by other scientists from around the world.  Good Bowls is a business extension that combines that scientific research with a public health initiative and is feeding people across the region and improving the health of everyone that enjoys one of the bowls.
