An August Harvest of Bountiful Bowls

When we sat down with the Executive Director from Communities in Schools of Chatham County, Tych Cowdin told us that, “over the course of the pandemic, food insecurity became a big issue, particularly in our town.”

This last summer it appeared that the worst of the pandemic was behind us, but now it looks like we still have some work to do. With regard to food equity, many families are still struggling to put food on the table and local restaurants are facing an ever-changing set of challenges.

Adding some shredded cheese to 218 donated bowls at The Root Cellar.

The Good Bowls Pay-It-Forward program has been working to help these families and small businesses throughout the year. Our most recent August campaign was our biggest success to date! During this round we partnered with The Root Cellar and Pittsboro EATS! and the generous people in our community donated 218 meals to help feed families in need.

Barbara and Sally spend the day heat sealing the meals getting them ready for donation.

This last weekend, the volunteer crew headed down to The Root Cellar’s Pittsboro location and Chef Sera Cuni whipped up a chicken-burrito style bowl packed with fresh roasted North Carolina vegetables, complete with sweet potatoes and a homemade salsa. We spent the morning filling the bowls with brown rice and a delicious mixture of veggies while Sally and Barbara from Pittsboro EATS! (wo)manned the heat sealer all day and filled cooler after cooler with tasty meals.

Tych Cowdin of Communities in Schools is excited to distribute nutritious meals to all of his clients.

On Monday we dropped off a truck load of frozen bowls to Communities in Schools and Tych was particularly excited because he notes that, “ one of the biggest aspects in the work we do is helping kids find nutritious avenues for food.” Tych and his staff at CIS will spend the next couple weeks handing out bowls to kids and their families in an effort to alleviate the food insecurity in so many communities during the pandemic.

Good Bowls runs the Pay-it-Forward program every other month, so join our mailing list or follow us at @good_bowls to learn how you can get involved. We can continue this important work of feeding our neighbors one healthy bowl at a time, so you can donate a Good Bowl today! And be sure to check back the first week of October to see who our new locally-owned restaurant partner is, we change it up every round.
